Detailing and car care products are getting better and better, while car paints seem to be getting increasingly delicate... How should you wash your car without causing damage? Below we present techniques and tips for washing a car, including some unique Japanese tricks.
Let's start with the theory, and introduce the practice while discussing the accessories. First, let's briefly cover a few key topics related to hand washing a car.
Washing technique matters
Thoroughly rinsing the car before hand washing
This is the most fundamental rule. Always remove loose dirt from the car with a thorough rinse, ideally combined with a pre-wash — for example, applying an active foam or a spray, depending on the level of dirt. Focus on the nooks and crannies where hard particles of sand may be lodged.
Use the power of a pressure washer and start rinsing from the roof. Don't forget about frequently overlooked elements such as wheel arches and the area around the fuel filler cap.
The two-bucket wash method
The "two-bucket" car washing method has firmly established itself in the detailer's vocabulary. But what does it actually mean?
It is a car washing technique that minimises the transfer of sand particles back onto the paintwork (via a sponge or wash mitt). How do you carry out a wash using this method?
Prepare two buckets. In one, mix car shampoo with water according to the proportions recommended by the manufacturer. Simply fill the second bucket with clean water — this will be used to rinse your sponge or wash mitt.
An additional factor that will make washing safer is using a dirt separator, sometimes called a Grit Guard. A separator placed on the bottom of the bucket limits the stirring up of particles in the water and prevents them from being picked up by the sponge, significantly reducing the risk of scratching the bodywork. Many detailing-specific buckets already come with such a separator included — for example, our Soft99 Bucket, which we cover in a little more detail below.
Washing from top to bottom
Another simple but life-making rule. There's no point in moving dirt from the lower sections of the bodywork up to the higher ones. When rinsing and washing the car, always start from the roof and windows, gradually working your way down. Rinse your sponge or wash mitt frequently, or flip it to a clean side when possible. If in doubt, let gravity do the work and rinse the car generously.
Wash the dirtiest elements last — but if you can, apply the principle described below.
The Japanese style of washing
It sounds complicated, but it's probably the simplest and most obvious way to reduce the amount of particles picked up by the sponge. When starting to hand wash your vehicle, simply soak the sponge with water, then apply shampoo directly onto the wet sponge. This way, you'll thoroughly saturate the sponge with cleaning product.
If you prefer a more economical approach, stick with mixing shampoo and water in a bucket.
Separate accessories for wheels and other dirty elements
Bumpers, lower sills, exhaust tips, painted surfaces inside wheel arches, and of course the wheels themselves — these are typically the dirtiest parts of a car's bodywork, and they're well worth using separate accessories for.
It's best to divide your car care accessories into 3 groups: paintwork, glass, and "dirty" parts. A dedicated sponge for the wheels means you'll significantly reduce the risk of pulling hard dirt particles deep into the sponge, mitt, or cloth. Your paint and glass will thank you for it.
Car washing accessories that are safe for paintwork
Now that we know the basics... what should you safely wash your car with? If you care about protecting your paintwork, you're better off not looking for accessories at the supermarket. The days of oversized yellow car sponges and rough wheel brushes are over!
Go for trusted solutions from manufacturers known for high quality. Within the Soft99 range, we recommend the following products:
QJUTSU Ultrasoft Sponge
There are detailers for whom touching a car with a sponge is sacrilege. We don't always agree — and with this Japanese sponge, we've managed to change the minds of many specialists.

The QJUTSU Ultrasoft is a three-layer sponge designed specifically with the needs of detailers in mind. What sets it apart?
The highly permeable top layer absorbs shampoo exceptionally well. The densely structured middle layer allows air to pass through, enabling the creation of a thick, rich lather. The bottom layer prevents liquid from escaping, ensuring that plenty of water and shampoo is always waiting inside the sponge during the wash. The result? A consistently smooth and gentle hand wash.
Microfibre Super Cloth
What makes the perfect microfibre cloth? We believe it should be versatile.
The Super Cloth microfibre makes it easy to apply, spread, and then buff out any cleaning or protection product for your vehicle.

The microfibre works perfectly with quick detailers, interior cleaning products, and all kinds of liquid solutions. It's excellent for polishing waxes, glass coatings, ceramic coatings, and of course for drying. The dense weave with triangular stitching guarantees durability and clean, lint-free results with no risk of scratching or leaving threads on the surface.
Soft99 Bucket
We wanted our first official Soft99 car washing bucket to be a true detailing treat.

Together with the automotive experts at Race City and their Nissan GT-R R35, we created a unique, unmistakably Japanese design for the side of the bucket. It features the legendary Nissan model mentioned above, alongside a motif inspired by "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" — the famous woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai, a Japanese master of woodblock printing.
Beyond the design, we've equipped the bucket with practical extras to make washing easier. Inside you'll find a Grit Guard dirt separator, giving you confidence that you'll always pick up clean, particle-free water with your sponge. A secure lid also lets you transform the bucket into a handy storage container.
An effective and easy-to-use car shampoo
Car shampoos are valued for good reason — neutral pH, strong cleaning properties, and ease of use. We've combined all three of these qualities in our best-selling QJUTSU shampoo.
QJUTSU Creamy Shampoo
With QJUTSU Creamy Shampoo, we developed the formula of the well-known and well-loved Neutral Creamy Shampoo — a favourite among Soft99 fans — which is why the name pays homage to it. Our goal was to create a car shampoo that's ideal for both beginners and professionals alike: safe for paintwork, waxes and coatings, yet highly effective at cleaning.

The key was a neutral pH — a quality highly regarded in detailing. This means you can wash your car without compromising the protective properties of Soft99 waxes or QJUTSU quartz coatings applied to the paintwork.
The shampoo is exceptionally easy and pleasant to use. It stands out with a thick, mint-scented lather and a unique formula that prevents the shampoo from leaving marks on the bodywork as it dries. This means you can wash your car at your own pace, without worrying about having to rinse it off quickly. It also works seamlessly as an active foam — dilution instructions are printed on the packaging.
The most important news? Coming very soon (April 2026), QJUTSU Creamy Shampoo will be available in 5-litre canisters. Sales will begin at Soft99 partner locations across Europe, so you can expect the new size just in time for the start of warmer weather.
